Image
The 74 year old political leader has made a huge mark in Nigeria with his name written on the sands of time with gold never to be washed away easily. President Muhammadu Buhari might be sick and probably enduring some unpopular moments in his political career due to the crises in Nigeria but he has achieved a milestone in his life. He has broken the nation’s record as the first Nigerian to enter the English dictionary. He is the first Nigerian to have a political term – “Buharism” named after him. According to the Wikipedia, “Buharism is a term rooted in the politics of Nigeria, referring to the economic principles and the political ideology of the military government of Nigeria headed by General Muhammadu Buhari from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985. This ideology shares common features with fascism; the government was a right-wing nationalist government that pursued corporatist economic programs and curtailed personal freedoms. Economic reforms were characterised as moving the

Mars Surface Is Looking Much Deadlier Than We Previously Thought

Image
So much for those space potatoes. SIGNE DEAN 7 JUL 2017 A new study has revealed that compounds present in the Martian soil can wipe out whole bacterial cultures within minutes. Researchers have had their suspicions over whether microorganisms can actually survive on the surface of the Red Planet, and now lab tests are spelling doom for any potential little green bacteria. And yeah, growing potatoes on Mars might be more difficult than we thought. The problem here lies with perchlorates - chlorine-containing chemical compounds that we first detected on Mars back in 2008. These salty compounds are also what makes water on the Martian surface stay liquid, essentially turning it into brine. Perchlorates are considered toxic for people, but they don't necessarily pose a problem for microbes. And because they keep surface water liquid, on Mars the presence of these compounds could even be beneficial for life - or so we thought. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh

The original ATM was the brainchild of Scottish inventor Shepherd-Barron, and was commissioned by Barclays to create six cash dispensers, the first of which was installed at Enfield. English actor Reg Varney, who starred in the British TV comedy show “On The Buses”, was the first person to withdraw cash from the new machine. The ATM was designed to transform people’s ability to manage their finances by giving customers access to cash outside bank branch opening hours. Despite the rise in other new technolog

Bird Flight May Dictate Difference In Egg Shape

From the almost perfectly spherical eggs of the brown hawk owl to the pointy eggs of the sandpiper, there is a surprising variety in the shape of bird eggs. Yet why birds lay different shaped eggs has remained unanswered, until now. It seems that the shape of an egg is not determined by the environment in which the adult lives, but instead by how it flies. There have been many drivers suggested to explain the differences in egg shapes seen across the avian world. A popular one posits that the shape is dictated by where the bird nests, using those birds that set up shop on cliffs as the perfect case. Some sea birds have eggs that are incredible pointy, for example, meaning they roll in a tight circle. This has been argued to be an adaptation to prevent them rolling off the cliff. Yet now it seems that this shape may instead be dictated by how much the species flies. By studying the shapes of over 50,000 eggs from 1,400 different species held in museum collections, the researchers were

This smart billboard coughs if you smoke near it

Image
When smokers walk by a certain billboard in Stockholm, something strange happens: The billboard coughs at them. The innovative advertisement is paid for by a Swedish pharmacy chain that wants to encourage smokers to kick their smelly habit. At first glance, the digital screen positioned outside a metro station shows only a simple photo of a model. But walk by with a lit cigarette and the man in the picture starts coughing, clearly bothered by the smoke. The screen then changes again, offering various products sold by pharmacy chain Apotek Hjartat that can help smokers quit. Akestam Holst, the agency behind the campaign, created the effect by attaching smoke detectors to the digital advertising screen. They chose a location where people often smoke -- Stockholm's Odenplan square -- and let the coughing begin. The agency filmed the reactions of smokers -- some express surprise, others react with laughter. The resulting video has been posted online and is being shared widely. &q

Mysterious radio signal traced to dwarf galaxy 3 billion light-years away

Image
A mysterious signal that has confounded scientists for years has been traced to a spot in the sky more than 3 billion light-years away. Almost a decade after the first fast radio burst (FRB) was discovered, an international team of researchers has pinpointed the origin of one such signal as a dwarf galaxy in the pentagon-shaped constellation Auriga. Scientists originally thought the signal -- sporadic bursts of radio waves -- was coming from within the Milky Way itself, or from our closest galactic neighbors, but a new report in the journal Nature confirms it emanates from a tiny galaxy 1% the mass of our own. "These radio flashes must have enormous amounts of energy to be visible from over 3 billion light-years away," Cornell University researcher Shami Chatterjee said in a statement. Ultra-rare galaxy could be 'one of a kind' Visible-light image of the dwarf galaxy from which signal FRB121102 is emanating. Distant signals Fast radio bursts were first discover
